Mexican Silver
In the early twentieth century, Mexico's past was remote and mysterious to westerners. The Mexicans were considered a concurred people and so their art was hidden from the world. After the revolution of 1910, an explosion of creativity took place, initiated by Mexican and North Americans who recognised the greatness of Mexican artistry.
William Spratling came to the village of Taxco in the 1920s, discovered artefacts and indigenous crafts. These forms were adopted and interpreted in silver, he inspired Mexican artisans and participated with them in brining about an artistic renaissance.
Today ancient and modern aspects of life are intertwined. Silversmiths continue to use the traditional materials of the past and employ both ancient techniques and modern machines, to produce some of the finest handcrafted silver in the world.
They find inspiration for their designs Mixtec codices and on Aztec temples. Designs inspired and reproduced from world famous artisans – William Spratling, Hector Aguilar, Margot De Taxco and Antonia Pineda. For Mexico, the beautifully designed and fashioned silver of Taxco has been a measure of its revolution.
